Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy on Saturday requested Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to instruct officials concerned to expedite the process of free distribution of five kg rice to each family under the Prime Minister Garib Kalyan Annayojana (PMGKA) scheme.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Reddy urged him to give instructions to officials for early distribution of rice to poor people. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has already procured required rice for distributing it in Telangana but the same was not distributed.
In view of the problems being faced by the poor people due to Covid-19 virus, it is imperative to distribute rice allotted for the month of April, May and June. He also urged the State government to give necessary instructions to the field-level officers and fair price shop dealers to expedite the process of distributing rice under the PMGKA scheme.
“We came to know that the rice allocated for the month of May under PMGKA scheme was also not distributed and only rice that was given every month was given,” he said. Reddy added that the Central government has introduced the scheme to benefit 80 crore people in the country during the pandemic. The Centre has distributed rice free of cost to the people last year after the outbreak of the virus, he added.
