Krishna basin brims while Godavari runs dry, even as heavy rains continue to lash Telangana
Reservoirs in Telangana’s Krishna basin, including Srisailam, Jurala, and Nagarjuna Sagar, are operating at full capacity amid heavy inflows, releasing significant volumes downstream. In contrast, reservoirs in the Godavari basin remain dry, though tributaries like Pranahita and Medigadda Barrage report substantial flow.
Hyderabad: Major reservoirs in the Krishna basin, including Jurala, Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar and Pulichintala, are experiencing heavy inflows, while those in the Godavari basin, from Jayakwadi to Annaram, remain relatively dry. However, downstream tributaries like the Pranahita in the Godavari basin are in spate.
At Srisailam, an inflow of over 2 lakh cusecs is being balanced with a discharge of 2.15 lakh cusecs. Jurala is maintaining an outflow of 1.18 lakh cusecs against an inflow of 1.15 lakh cusecs. Nagarjuna Sagar, with 24 of its 26 gates lifted, is releasing 1.64 lakh cusecs to match an inflow of 1.61 lakh cusecs, with downstream releases reaching some 2 lakh cusecs toward projects like Pulichintala.
All Krishna basin reservoirs are currently at full capacity.
In contrast, Godavari basin reservoirs are seeing varied inflows. Jayakwadi in Maharashtra recorded zero inflow, while Sriramsagar received around 6,000 cusecs. Nizamsagar and Singur reported inflows of 2,128 cusecs and 4,635 cusecs, respectively, and Yellampalli saw 5,262 cusecs. At the Medigadda Barrage, all 85 gates are open, maintaining both inflow and outflow at 1.58 lakh cusecs.
