Hyderabad: The Krishna and Godavari rivers are in flood, swollen by heavy monsoon rains. The surging flows have prompted officials to open all gates of major projects to control the flood. From Almatti to Nagarjuna Sagar in the Krishna basin and from Singur to Sitarama project in the Godavari basin, almost every gate is kept fully open, maintaining heavy discharges.

The gates at the Nizam Sagar and Sriram Sagar projects were also kept fully open, adding to the massive water flow.

Torrential rains in Maharashtra and Karnataka have caused huge water inflows into the Krishna River. At the Jurala Project, 2.05 lakh cusecs of water is pouring in, and officials are releasing 2.32 lakh cusecs of water downstream. The floodwaters from Jurala and Tungabhadra have increased the flow into Srisailam reservoir. By Tuesday morning, Srisailam was receiving 3.39 lakh cusecs of water, leading officials to raise 10 gates by 12 feet to release almost the same volume downstream.

Power plants in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana at Srisailam are also releasing 66,099 cusecs. The inflows into Nagarjuna Sagar as of Tuesday morning stand at 3.70 lakh cusecs, while an outflow is maintained at 3.80 lakh cusecs.

The Godavari River is no less in the volume of flood flow, with water levels steadily rising. The opening of Nizam Sagar and Sriram Sagar gates added heavy flows to the flood in the river. Villages near the rivers are on the edge, with memories of past floods making people worry.

Officials are closely watching water levels and coordinating with upstream and downstream projects to control the flow. With more rain expected in the coming days, the situation is under close watch.
