Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao condemned the Congress government’s decision to ban protests at Osmania University, calling it a direct assault on democracy. He charged the government with breaking its promise of upholding democratic rights and the right to protest, terming the move as the most evil act against student protests.

In a statement, Rama Rao reminded that the Congress had promised in its manifesto to protect the right to protest, but was now crushing student voices. He likened the ban to the Emergency era under Indira Gandhi, alleging a conspiracy to suppress democratic rights.

“In its election manifesto, the Congress promised to provide democratic governance as its seventh guarantee. But within 15 months, the Congress had not only failed to uphold its guarantees but is now trampling on the same promise and suppressing student voices, against the spirit of democracy” he said.

Condemning the government’s handling of student issues, the BRS working president cited recent incidents where worms and blades were found in hostel food, in a glaring example of negligence. He said instead of addressing grievances, the government was resorting to authoritarian measures against students.

He warned that any attempt to run Osmania University with an iron fist would backfire, as the people of Telangana would not tolerate such oppressive tactics. He declared that the students, who played a crucial role in the Telangana statehood movement, would resist this suppression, and the Congress government would face severe consequences for its actions.
