Nizamabad/Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi founder president and former MP K Kavitha won the MLC bypoll for the Nizamabad Local Bodies constituency with a bumper majority of 672 votes over her opponents. She set a record of sorts by securing 728 of the 823 votes, accounting for about 88 per cent of the total votes polled even as both the Congress and BJP candidates lost their deposits.
Kavitha, accompanied by Roads and Buildings Minister V Prashanth Reddy and other legislators from erstwhile Nizamabad district, called on Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao at Pragathi Bhavan in the evening and sought his blessings.
Of the total 824 votes, 823 votes were polled in the by-election — 821 ballot and two postal ballots votes. Kavitha was way ahead right from the first round, bagging 531 of the 600 votes and continued with the trend in the second round where she polled another 197 votes. She won the by-election by a massive margin of 672 votes against her nearest opponent BJP candidate P Lakshmi Narayana who polled just 56 votes, while V Subhash Reddy from the Congress managed to get a mere 29 votes. In all, 10 votes were rejected.
With the counting trend clearly indicating a huge victory for Kavitha, party cadre broke into celebrations in several parts of erstwhile Nizamabad district. Party workers gave her a grand welcome on her arrival in Nizamabad and Kamareddy district headquarters where she inspected the counting process. The by-polls mark the return of Kavitha into active politics after a brief break of one and a half year, and her comeback received massive public support.
Speaking on the occasion, Kavitha thanked Chandrashekhar Rao for giving her an opportunity once again to serve people. She also thanked Prashant Reddy, MPs, MLAs, MLCs and the party cadre who worked hard to achieve this landslide victory.
The by-election was necessitated following the disqualification of sitting MLC R Bhoopathi Reddy. Though the election was scheduled to be held on April 7, it was postponed to October 10 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
