Hyderabad: It is rightly said that “Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you are going”. One should always trust this process as it is what matters in a healthy life of a person. So, what is mental health? It is “A state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her abilities; copes with the normal stresses of life; can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to his or her community”.
Different people have different mental health statuses. This may be due to various reasons such as childhood abuse, social isolation, experiencing discrimination, bereavement, poverty, etc. These situations do have a very huge impact on one’s mental health or entirely one’s life.
To improve one’s mental health one has to always try their best to control their emotions and try to cope with challenging situations. Working on enhancing awareness about self is very crucial to sound mental health. Reduction in anxiety, improved moods, clearer thinking, improvements in relationships, are some of the benefits of having good mental health and everyone must strive towards attaining this.
World Mental Health Day celebrated on October 10, is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. According to its objectives, everyone must make efforts to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. As a society, more support groups should be initiated within the home and community. An attitude of being non-judgmental needs to be developed among the larger population and giving equal importance to mental health just like physical well-being is the necessity of the hour.
