Low cotton yield drives farmer to end life in Telangana’s Adilabad

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Low cotton yield reportedly forced a farmer to end his life by consuming pesticide at Bondaguda village in Asifabad mandal on Tuesday.

Asifabad Inspector Ravinder, in a statement, said Komram Poshaiah (55) died by suicide as he was depressed by the poor cotton yield. He had attempted suicide on Monday.

He was shifted to a hospital in Mancherial. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment on Tuesday. Poshaiah grew the cotton crop on his 10 acres of land. He was disheartened to register a dip in yield and consumed the pesticide when he was alone.

Based on a complaint received from Naresh, Poshaiah’s son, a case was registered.

At least eight farmers have died by suicide in Adilabad district from December 1 to January 25. Mailapur Narsaiah, a 55-year-old farmer, ended his life by hanging as he was depressed over his inability to repay mounting debts at Varthamannur village in Bazarhathnoor mandal on January 25.

On January 23, Gode Govind Rao, 45, took the drastic step by consuming pesticide at his farm in Shamshabad village in Bela mandal. Rao grew cotton on four acres of land and took on a lease from another farmer of the village by borrowing a loan of Rs 5 lakh.
