Adilabad: A tenant farmer died by suicide as he was allegedly depressed over his inability to repay mounting debts at Mirzapur village in Bela mandal on Thursday. This is the sixth case of suicide by a farmer in the district in the last couple of months.
Locals said that Gode Govind Rao, 45, took the drastic step by consuming pesticide at his farm. Rao grew cotton in four acres of land took on a lease from another farmer of the village by borrowing a loan of Rs 5 lakh.
He registered losses due to poor yield. He was distressed over his inability to repay the loan. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Meanwhile, former Minister Jogu Ramanna, in a press statement, expressed concern over the frequent farmer suicides. He stated that tenant farmers were reeling under a severe crisis caused by crop failure and lower yields than expected.
He demanded Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to extend crop investment support to tenant farmers as promised at the time of the polls.
A 40-year-old tenant farmer, Rathod Gokul from Lingojiguda Thanda in Utnoor mandal, who attempted to die by suicide on January 12, died while undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here on January 19.
Jadav Devrao, 55, from Renuguda in Bela mandal, was forced to end his life by consuming pesticide as he felt allegedly humiliated when officials of a bank allegedly harassed him for delaying payment of an instalment of his personal loan on the premises of the bank in Adilabad on January 18.
Earlier, three farmers in the district died by suicide as they were disheartened by their inability to repay loans between December 1 to January 11.
