Hyderabad: Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy on Thursday directed officials to prepare for possible water scarcity linked to El Niño by conserving water, improving distribution and promoting treated sewage water for construction and maintaining green spaces.
He issued the directions during a coordination meeting with Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) officials at the corporation office in Tarnaka. He asked them to prepare plans to bridge supply gaps, ensure efficient water use and develop alternative sources to address potential shortages.
Officials were told to conduct extensive awareness programmes to curb water wastage in households, commercial establishments, construction sites, parks and other areas.
To reduce dependence on potable water, the MMC commissioner asked officials to encourage construction firms to use treated water from sewage treatment plants wherever possible. He also directed them to explore using treated water to irrigate parks, green belts and other green spaces.
The MMC commissioner called for public participation to turn water conservation into a mass movement, focusing on curbing wastage, reusing treated water and efficiently using available resources.
