Hyderabad: A young mechanical engineering graduate who turned into a thief targeting elderly customers at ATM centres was arrested by the Nacharam police here on Wednesday. Police recovered Rs 90,000 and 11 ATM cards from him.
The arrested suspect was identified as S Shiva Kumar (25), who graduated in B Tech (Mechanical) from a reputed private engineering college in 2019, and was a resident of Devakadra in Mahabubnagar.
According to the police, Shiva Kumar targeted elderly persons with little or no knowledge of withdrawing money from ATM centres. He approached them in the guise of helping them and then collected their PIN and exchanged their debit card with a duplicate one. Once they left, he withdrew money from their accounts, police said.
He was involved in six similar cases including in Nacharam, Ghatkesar, Malkajgiri and Neredmet. He was also arrested by the Ghatkesar police. Recently, he cheated a 57-year-old employee of the Food Corporation of India and withdrew Rs 20,000 from his account at an ATM in Mallapur. Based on his complaint, a case was booked and Shiva Kumar was arrested from an ATM centre in Mallapur. He was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
