Mancherial: The seven-day long annual Brahmotsvam at the ancient Sri Sathyanarayana Swamy temple, regarded as Annavaram of Telangana, got off to a colorful start at Gudem village in Dandepalli mandal on Wednesday. Special programmes are being held to mark the occasion.
The historic temple, located on a hillock, was decked up with colorful flowers and lamps in view of the festivities. Apart from usual Nithyanidhi, Vishwakshenaradhana and special Bajans were held on the first day of the ceremony. The main event of the ceremonies, celestial wedding of the presiding deity with Sri Rama will be conducted on February 13. Chariot procession will be held on February 17.
Sankatala Srinivas, the executive officer of the shrine stated elaborate arrangements were made for the smooth conduct of the ceremonies. He said that sanitation facilities, parking lots and first aid kits were created. TSRTC is plying special buses to clear the rush. He suggested devotees could participate in the wedding ceremony by paying a fee of Rs 500 per head.
During the ceremonies, jatara or fair is conducted on the premises of the shrine.
Thousands of devotees belonging to erstwhile Adilabad and neighboring Jagtial, Peddapalli Karimnagar and Warangal districts congregate at the holy place and take darshan of the presiding deity by forming serpentine queue lines. They take a holy dip in Godavari river, situated a kilometer away.
Located on the left bank of Godavari, the abode of Sri Satyanarayana Swamy is thronged by pilgrims belonging to several parts of Telangana, Maharashtra and Chattisgarh. Couples visit the temple and perform Satyanarayana Swamy Vratham to express their gratitude for fulfilling their wishes and seeking the wellbeing of their family members.
Principal priests Govardhana Raghu Swami, Sampath Swamy, Suresh Swamy, vedic pundits D Narayana Sharma, Bharath Sharma, priest J Jaya Swamy and staffers were present.
