Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Drawing inspiration from her father, a soldier in the Indian Army, Kanchan Yadav from Kaghaznagar town expressed her desire to join the Border Security Force (BSF) to her parents. But, she was discouraged and advised to choose some other field by her father. She, however, convinced him and was selected as a jawan of the BSF after she excelled in both the written and physical tests.
“The father is a superhero to any daughter. For me, my father Om Prakash is not only my role model but is also a and source of inspiration. He has rendered service to the Indian Army for 22 years, facing challenges and sacrificing important moments in life. He has left a profound impact on me. I was determined to become an army woman when I was graduating,” Kanchan told Telangana Today.
Kanchan said she was initially upset when her father turned down her wish, citing the nature of the job. “However, I managed to persuade him and applied for the post of a BSF jawan while pursuing degree at a private college in the town. I started training to appear for the physical test. I was supported and encouraged by my mother and coach Niyaz,” she said.
Kanchan was shortlisted by the selection board in 2018, bringing her closer to realizing her dream. But, she had to wait for physical training for over a year due to Covid-19 induced lockdown. She fared well in the training and is currently undergoing a five month technical training at aBSF institution at Baikunthapur of West Bengal.
She is all set to join duty with the BSF in March, 2022. Incidentally, Kanchan is the first woman to venture into the BSF from Kumram Bheem Asifabad district. “I am proud to be the first woman from the district to opt for a career with the security agency and hope to set an example for other girls in the backward district,” she said.
Om Prakash said he was worried when his daughter disclosed her desire to join the BSF, considering the living conditions and problems involved in safeguarding the borders of the country. “She, however, convinced me with the help of her mother,” he said, adding that he is proud to be recognised as the father of Kanchan now.
