The Election Commission of India has directed enhanced security measures for the second phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal on April 29. Over 2,300 companies of central forces will be deployed, with the highest concentration in North and South 24 Parganas.

The WB Police’s Special Task Force has arrested two Bangladeshi nationals accused of assassinating political activist Sharif Osman Hadi in Dhaka last December. The suspects, Rahul alias Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain, travelled across the North-East and north Bengal using false identities.

Yet another attempt by smugglers to smuggle narcotics by drone was foiled by vigilant BSF troops, said the statement.

Officials said that one intruding militant was killed in the Khour area of Akhnoor sector on the IB in Jammu when alert BSF troops foiled an infiltration bid.

The seized item is suspected to be heroin, whose gross weight is 2 kg.

This is the second ceasefire violation at the International Border in less than 10 days. On October 17, Pak Rangers had resorted to unprovoked firing towards BSF troops, in which two BSF personnel received injuries.

In another joint search operation, a packet of narcotics suspected to be 530 gm heroin, wrapped with yellow adhesive tape, was recovered from fields in Dhanoe Kalan village in Amritsar district. 

The personnel, sensing a threat, opened fire, killing the man on the spot, the official added. More details are awaited. 

The Chinar Corps of the Indian Army said the joint operation, was launched along LOC in Macchal Sector, Kupwara.
