Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Sirpur (T) MLA Koneru Konappa performed the mass marriage of 111 couples from the poorer sections of society at the ancient Sri Kalika Devi temple on the shores of Peddavagu, a tributary of Pranahita in Penchikalpet mandal centre on Sunday.
Government whip Balka Suman was the chief guest at the event. Konappa and his wife Rama Devi personally donned the role of elders of the couples and performed the weddings. They gifted crockery, new clothes, and household appliances, besides sponsoring mangalsutra and toe-rings and offering a sumptuous lunch to family members of both the bride and groom. They congratulated the couples and had lunch with them after the wedding.
Konappa said that he came forward to conduct the mass weddings to express my gratitude to the people of Sirpur (T) Assembly constituency for electing me thrice. He expressed my gratitude to those who extended their cooperation to the success of the event. He thanked government whip Balka Suman and Vittal for gracing the occasion and blessing the newly wedded pairs.
The couples, mostly tribals, their relatives and family members arrived at the venue using different means of transit including trolleys, jeeps and auto-rickshaws. The hapless pairs were visibly elated to tie the knot amid Vedic hymns and at the holy place on a grand note. They belonged to several villages of Bejjur, Chintalamanepalli, Dahegaon and Penchikalpet mandals. The tiny temple and surrounding agriculture fields became the venue of the mass weddings.
Memorable event
Prasad and Srimathi, a tribal pair from Yellur village in Penchikalpet mandal thanked the legislator for officiating their wedding and sponsoring the home appliances. They said that entering into wedlock in a glittering ceremony was a memorable event. They added that they would be indebted to Konappa forever for fulfilling their dream.
500 mass weddings so far
To his credit, Konappa had performed mass weddings of 500 couples so far. He had solemnised 124 tribal couples including 21 from neighbouring Maharashtra state at a venue erected near the remote Somini village in Bejjur mandal and on the borders of Telangana and Maharashtra on February 24 in 2020. He had sponsored marriages of 116 pairs in Kaghaznagar in 2018. He had sponsored marriages of over 160 pairs in 2021 and 2022.
District Zilla Parishad Vice-Chairperson Koneru Krishna, Collector Rahul Raj, SP Suresh Kumar and Kaghaznagar agriculture market committee chairman Kasam Srinivas, municipal chairperson Saddam Hussain, vice-chairperson Rachakonda Girish Kumar, Penchikalpet mandal parishad president Jajimogga Srinivas, TRS mandal president Choudari Tirupathi, sarpanch association president Upasi Sanjeev and many others were present.
