Hyderabad: Local talent Ravi Kumar Banneoulu, who has put up consistent performances across the regatta in the under-15 Optimist fleet, won a race on Wednesday to be in the reckoning for a podium finish, with four more races across three days remaining in the Monsoon Regatta at Hussain Sagar Lake.
Ravi, a student of Udbhav School, Rasoolpura, got a great start and dropped to sixth place and thereafter with some calculated reading of wind shifts in his home waters, he managed to get ahead of M. Naveen from Thara Home.
Naveen is an orphan from Thara home Bowenpally, who took to sailing two years ago and was leading the fleet until Ravi overtook him at the finish, relegating him to second position in the race.
Naveen has also been selected by the Navy Youth Sports School at INS Mandovi Goa, and will soon be heading to be part of the Navy youth team.
The race in the under-15 had mixed results, with leader Shreya Krishna dropping to ninth in one race but regaining composure to win the last race of the day still topping the charts with a significant margin and is certain to win gold.
The Under-19 40-class mixed doubles was almost a familiar script with Telangana’s Thanuja and Shravan as well as Deekshita and Ganesh finishing as always first and second and both are now in an almost unassailable position for gold and silver podium guarantees. Samriddhi and Parth from NSS Bhopal are sitting tight on bronze.
The Under-15 category also featured a Green Fleet for beginners, which was dominated by two young sailors from Haryana Aayu and Sakshi. The Yacht Club of Hyderabad adopted 4 children from Haryana and is funding and nurturing their progress in sailing. This is their third championship and it looks like both are heading to the podium with no competition.
Ishi Gupta of Secunderabad Sailing Club and Sakshi Mandal of Telangana Sailing Association are close behind them.
In the under-18 Laser Class, Sharanya Jhadav and Ramakant, both of the Navy Youth Sailing team, are leading the fleet and despite a few challenges ahead, it looks like both are on track to reach the podium.
