More tanks overflowing in Krishna Basin after the rains, Mahbubnagar tops

Hyderabad: Despite the damage that the rains and resultant floods have caused to over 923 tanks all over the State, over 24,149 tanks were overflowing and at least 15,152 tanks are almost touching the brim with copious inflows. The Krishna basin has 15,589 tanks overflowing and the Godavari basin has 8,560 tanks overflowing bringing cheer to local farmers.
According to the data available with the Water Resources department of the State, the area under the supervision of the Superintending Engineer Mahbubnagar has 5,402 tanks overflowing, which is the highest among other areas of the Krishna basin. In Sangareddy 5,340 tanks were overflowing with 3,017 tanks reaching their full capacity. Nalgonda has 2,513 tanks overflowing, 898 tanks reaching their full tank capacity and over 690 tanks reaching capacity between 50-75 per cent in Nalgonda. Rangareddy district has 2,334 tanks overflowing and 775 tanks reaching 75-100 per cent capacity.
Under the Godavari basin, Karimnagar tops the list of tanks overflowing with 2,895 tanks out of 4,290 tanks of the district. Karimnagar has 1,004 tanks reaching to the full tank level. In Warangal the number of tanks overflowing was 2,804 out of the total number of 6,030 tanks in the district. Khammam which has 3883 tanks in total has 1706 tanks over owing and 2130 tanks are reaching full level. Nizamabad has 440 tanks overflowing and 2091 tanks are reaching the full level. Nirmal has 715 tanks overflowing and 1697 tanks have reached full tank level.
On the other hand the State has witnessed breaches to 419 tanks in both the river basins, 189 minor breaches and 319 other kinds of damages taking the total to 923 damages. Highest number of breaches occurred in Mahbubnagar district under Krishna basin, while Warangal witnessed highest number of breaches because of rains under the Godavari basin.
The Water Resources department has constituted 15 technical teams led by senior engineers and other experts as per the instructions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. These technical teams will inspect all the affected tanks and submit a report on the precautionary measures to be taken in case of receiving more flood water. Based on the report the department will undertake repairs to these tanks.
