Hyderabad: With increased cases of Omicron being reported across the world, the committees of various mosques in the city are back to enforcing the Covid 19 safety protocols during the prayers.
At most of the mosques in the city, during the prayers, the ‘Imam’ (one who leads the prayers) is asking the people to adhere to the social distancing norms and suggesting they do the ablution at their houses while coming to the mosques.
“Hand sanitizers have been kept at the entrance of the mosque and regular spraying of disinfectant is being done. Home guards who offer the prayers along with the regular namazis are urging the people to maintain social distance during the prayers,” said Superintendent Mecca Masjid, Mohd Abdul Qadeer Siddiqui.
Around 300 people attend prayers at the historic Mecca Masjid during regular prayers while on special occasions including Friday the numbers rise to a few thousand.
Abdul Raheem, Muezzin of Jamia Masjid Hakeem Mir Vazir Ali at Fateh Darwaza in old city, said since the last few days he noticed that the numbers of elderly visitors to the mosque have significantly dropped. “People are taking precautions, especially senior citizens who are not attending the prayers at the mosque. Others who come for prayers are bringing their own prayer rugs and using a facemask,” he said.
Social activist and Khateeb Masjid e Teen Posh, Sultan Bazaar, Ilyas Shamshi said on last Friday during the sermon the masjid management committees across the city urged the people to follow Covid-19 protocols for their own safety. “Banners urging the people to adhere to the Covid-19 norms came up again at the mosques. During prayers also the Imam is urging for ensuring social distance and adequate safety measures,” he said.
Chairman Telangana State Wakf Board, Mohd Saleem, said the Wakf board during the Covid first wave had issued an advisory for the management of the mosques. “Following safety measures is the responsibility of one and all. No separate order is being issued by us to the mosques now, people are aware of the global situation and should stay safe,” he advised.
