Kohima: Nagaland on Saturday observed National Sports Day, with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio calling for continued efforts to strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem.

The formal event was organised by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here, where athletes and coaches were honoured with state-level cash awards for their outstanding achievements and contributions to sports at regional, national and international levels.

In a post on X, Rio said, “On National Sports Day, we celebrate the dedication and perseverance of our sportspersons and recognise the role of sports in promoting fitness, discipline, and teamwork.”

Rio also called upon all to continue to strengthen the sporting ecosystem and inspire a culture of active living, inclusivity and excellence.

Speaking at the event, secretary of youth resources and sports department, Anthony Ngullie, said the day, observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, provides an opportunity to recognise the importance of sports and acknowledge the dedication of sportspersons.

Ngullie said sports help instil discipline, teamwork, determination, patience and the ability to face both victory and defeat.

Congratulating the recipients, he said their hard work, sacrifices and perseverance would inspire young athletes to dream big and aspire to represent the state and the country at higher levels.

He also acknowledged the vital role of coaches in mentoring and guiding athletes, noting that their commitment and sacrifices contribute significantly to sporting success.

He said Nagaland has produced several outstanding sportspersons who have brought pride to the state through dedication and continuous effort, and encouraged young talents to take up sports and strive for excellence.

During the ceremony, meritorious sportspersons were presented with cash awards and citations, while their associated coaches were also recognised.

Puleno Neikha, sports coach (Sepaktakraw), and Deep Kumar, sports coach (Pencak Silat), received honours under the coaches award category. Winners of the National Sports Day Athletics Meet 2026 were also felicitated.
