Hyderabad: Natural Star Nani feels the content itself speaks and helps the movie reach a wider audience and make the right noise. No extra effort needs to be put in to make it pan-India film, he believes.
As Nani gears up for his period drama ‘Shyam Singha Roy’ to release on Friday, the actor shares how important it was for the entire team to put in effort when a massive sum is invested. “It’s not just about stellar star cast and top-notch technicians; working on a period drama tests the potential of art directors. It requires outstanding camerawork, detailing and quality in showing the bygone era of the ’60s. At the same time, it has a strong story. Audiences would get to experience culture-rich Bengal with myriad hues during the ’60s and ’70s.”
Nani plays a dual role in the film. First as a young, amateur, wannabe filmmaker Vasu, who is in search of the right female cast for his film in the form of Krithi Shetty, and circumstances that led him to look back into the past. The second half is about the character of Shyam Singha Roy, who fights against the evil practices prevailing in the society back then. How he meets a Devadasi (Sai Pallavi) in the process forms the gist of the story.
Admitting that he hasn’t done any background research to play the titular character Shyam Singha Roy in the film, Nani says the look and style could sometimes match the on-screen looks of yesteryear actors like Kamal Haasan. “Folding up the sleeves, and the twirling moustache – all might make you recollect the images of Kamal Haasan sir from the films like ‘Nayakudu’ and ‘Hey Ram’. But no such references have been taken from those films. I’m happy if you say the look of Shyam Singha Roy resembles Kamal Haasan’s characters,” he adds.
Emotional connect
The ‘Tuck Jagadish’ actor says legendary lyric writer late Sirivennela Sitaramasastry penning lyrics for the song in the film had given the entire team an emotional connect. “Soon after writing the song, director Sirivennala garu spoke to director Rahul Sankrityan. During the conversation, he made a jocular remark that it could be his last song. Unfortunately, it turned out to be true. The most interesting aspect is that Sirivennala told the entire story in the song. Probably, no writer in the world could ever do that. The song will remain as a sweet memory to all his admirers and fans.”
Irrespective of the box office numbers, selling content to OTT players gives much satisfaction to the actor. Following his success with last outing ‘Tuck Jagadish’ which was released on OTT, the Natural Star claims that subscriptions of Amazon Prime Video have risen considerably. “This time, they’re ready to offer ‘Shyam Singha Roy’ much more than what they had offered for the previous films. How can we say it’s not a success. My priority is always to safeguard the interest of producers.”
