Hyderabad: A four-member gang of Nepal nationals involved in two property offences in the city was arrested by the City Police on Wednesday. The police recovered Rs.4 lakh and five mobile phones from them.

The arrested persons were Kamal Shahi (35), a watchman, Bishal Shahi (23) a domestic help, Prakash Padma Bahadur (39), a cook with a fast food centre, and Manoj Kumar Rawat (36), also a cook. Four others who are part of the gang are absconding, police said.

City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar, announcing the arrest of the gang, said the prime suspect Kamal Shahi, who was previously involved in a case registered at the Abid Road police station two years ago, had stolen property valued at Rs 1.19 crore from the house of his employer when they went to attend a marriage function. The gang was also involved in a case registered in the Malakpet police station recently.

“They got employed as domestic helps and security guards in houses in the city and after working for a few months, plan burglaries in the absence of the house owner. The gang members stay in different areas of the city and stay in touch through social media,” Anjani Kumar said, adding that in the Malakpet case, the gang made away with Rs 11.50 lakh. Twelve teams were set up to nab and with help from CCTV footage, the teams tracked them to the Indo-Nepal border, from where they were caught.

The police have asked the people to use the HawkEye application to upload and verify credentials of domestic helps and drivers before employing them. Identify proof should be collected by employers, the Commissioner said.
