Hyderabad: If people these days are good at something, it is following trends on social media. If you’re someone who opens Instagram or Twitter every five minutes to check updates, then we bet you would have come across your friends searching the meaning of their names on Urban Dictionary and sharing it on their profiles. 

Founded in 1999 by Aaron Peckham, Urban Dictionary was intended as a dictionary of slang or cultural words and phrases, not typically found in standard dictionaries, but it is now used to define any word, event, or phrase (including sexually explicit content).

A trend that has gone viral overnight sees people going crazy looking at the unique and flattering definitions their names have on the online dictionary. Even Netflix India acknowledged the trend on Twitter and wrote, “The entire world to Urban Dictionary right now. Say my name.”

The official page of the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders tweeted the meaning of batsman Shubman Gill’s name. “Shubman Gill is known for his immaculate batting technique in cricket. When on song, he makes batting look very easy. Just 9-Test old has 4 half-centuries under his belt.”

Some social media users are already tired of people posting about the trend. “guys pls get done with urban dictionary name meanings #urbandictionary(sic),” tweeted a person. “Desperate people have found a new thing to do,” wrote another person.
