Hyderabad: Chip maker Intel India in collaboration with The International Institute of Information Technology- Hyderabad (IIIT-H) and Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) announced the launch of Institute of Artificial Intelligence (INAI), an applied AI research center in Hyderabad. It will work to apply AI to solve societal problems with a thrust on healthcare and smart mobility.
INAI will drive innovation and IP, entrepreneurship, creating curated datasets, computing infrastructure, tools and frameworks with an aim to attract global talent for high impact research towards social sector development. This collaborative effort will be anchored at IIIT-H and will bring multiple institutions together to work on solutions that have societal-scale impact. PHFI is the founding healthcare partner in this initiative.
“The inauguration of the new centres comes at an appropriate time. It is a matter of pride that the centre is located in Hyderabad and it will play a key role in taking the city many leaps ahead,”said Jayesh Ranjan, IT and Industries Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan, who spoke at the virtual inauguration.
Nivruti Rai, Country Head, Intel India and VP, Data Platforms Group, Intel Corporation said, “With its unique strengths of talent, technology, data availability, and the potential for population-scale AI adoption, India has tremendous opportunity to lead human-centric applications. We want to make AI synonymous with India as we strive to achieve the true potential of AI in healthcare and smart mobility among others.
The centre will advance research in road safety with the aim of using AI to reduce road accidents and fatalities in the country. In public health, it will work to enable solutions to extend health coverage to every individual and advance research for better prediction of non-communicable diseases. The need of the hour is for industry, government, academia and the public to work together to support development of technology with and apply it in an ethical and inclusive manner, she added.
IIIT-H Director PJ Narayanan said the IIIT-H is also working to create virtual libraries for technical education institutions and is seeing good response to them. It is also working on building a multi-language translation project and this will have impact education and other segments. Work on the INAI has been happening for a year and has collated various data points for scaling up.
