Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday directed the Secretary of the Telangana Transport Department and the Director General of Police (DGP) to take effective measures to develop and maintain proper zebra crossings at key junctions across Hyderabad. The Commission has given the authorities eight weeks to address the issue.
The orders followed a petition filed by a city-based advocate Yennam Balachander Reddy, who cited a report published in Telangana Today titled ‘Key Hyderabad Junctions Lack Zebra Crossings, Pedestrians at Risk’, which highlighted how several traffic junctions in the city lack proper markings, leaving pedestrians vulnerable and uncertain while crossing busy roads.
Taking cognisance of the petition, the NHRC registered a case and issued the directive to ensure compliance within the stipulated two-month period.
“This intervention underscores the significance of ensuring pedestrian safety and upholding the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India. I am hoping that the concerned authorities will take prompt and effective measures to install and maintain proper zebra crossings at key junctions in the larger public interest, in compliance with the NHRC order, within the stipulated time,” advocate Yennam Balachander Reddy said.
