Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken serious note of the ongoing municipal garbage dumping at the Hindu Graveyard in Macha Bollaram and has issued clear directions for its immediate stoppage.

The NHRC has ordered that garbage dumping and transfer operations being carried out by GHMC and the private agency Ramky at the transfer station located in and around the Hindu Graveyard must be stopped forthwith, according to a press release issued by Macha Bollaram Joint Action Committee.

The Commission has observed that dumping of municipal solid waste in a Hindu graveyard amounts to a violation of human rights, is an affront to the dignity of the deceased, and poses a serious threat to public health.

Accordingly, the NHRC has issued directions to The District Collector, Medchal–Malkajgiri District to take immediate steps to ensure that no garbage dumping or waste transfer takes place either within or adjacent to the Hindu cremation ground and to the Commissioner, GHMC to ensure that collection, storage, and transportation of municipal waste in and around the cremation ground is completely stopped.

The NHRC stated that these directions were issued after considering continuous complaints from residents of various colonies, a detailed examination of the status of the land, the existing graves, the adjacent lake, and the surrounding residential colonies, along with reports submitted by the District Administration and GHMC authorities.

Following the NHRC’s directions, Macha Bollaram Joint Action Committee President B.S.Uday Prakash, has urged the District Collector and the GHMC Commissioner to immediately stop all dumping-related activities in compliance with the NHRC orders.
