New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two key accused for alleged circulation of counterfeit currency notes through the Punjab National Bank currency chest in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Mukesh Kumar and Rajendra Kumar, both from Saharanpur, they said.

Both accused are close associates of the arrested key accused Adesh Choudhary and are also key accused in the conspiracy relating to the circulation of counterfeit currency notes through the Punjab National Bank (PNB) currency chest, Civil Lines, Saharanpur, the NIA said in a statement.

On August 29, Sadar Bazar police station, Saharanpur, received credible information regarding the recovery of counterfeit Indian currency notes with a face value of Rs 17.29 crore from the currency chest of PNB.

The involvement of three employees of the bank surfaced during the inquiry and they were accordingly suspended by the bank.

The case was initially registered by the local police on August 29 and then re-registered by the NIA on September 3.

The central agency arrested FIR-named accused Amit Kumar and Adesh Choudhary on September 7 and 15, respectively.
