NIMS doctors perform high‑risk heart procedure, save Telangana labourer’s life

A 30-year-old labourer from Telangana with severe heart conditions successfully underwent a complex minimally invasive procedure at NIMS, where doctors used advanced 3D mapping and radiofrequency ablation to treat irregular heartbeats.

Hyderabad: A 30-year-old labourer from Telangana, who was suffering from multiple medical heart conditions including irregular heartbeat, enlarged pumping heart chamber and weakened heart muscle, underwent minimally invasive treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS).

The cardiology team led by Head and Prof. O Sai Satish conducted procedures including EPS (Electrophysiological Study) and RFA (Radiofrequency Ablation) using advanced 3D mapping. Using 3D mapping, the doctors pinpointed the source of irregular beats right next to a main heart valve and a major coronary artery.

Treating weak spots in the heart was risky as a mistake could damage vital blood vessels or the heart valve. To do it safely, doctors mapped the blood vessels carefully using an angiogram and delivered radiofrequency energy to carefully neutralize the tiny spot of heart tissue causing the irregular rhythm.

“The patient tolerated the procedure well and had an uneventful recovery. Post-procedure monitoring showed total successful suppression of the irregular heartbeats. The procedure was performed free of cost under the Aarogyasri Scheme,” Dr Satish said.
