NIT Warangal marks 67 years of academic excellence

NIT Warangal commemorated its 67th foundation day with a lecture by Dr. Sanak Mishra and reflections on its journey from REC to a premier technical institute.

Hanamkonda: National Institute of Technology Warangal (NITW) celebrated its 67th foundation day in a grand manner on Friday

In 1959 India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for the first Regional Engineering College (REC) in the country in Warangal and it later evolved into NIT Warangal.

The Indian National Academy of Engineering and the Indian Institute of Metals former president Dr. Sanak Mishra delivered the foundation day lecture titled ‘The Hypothesis of the Hierarchy of Knowledge.’

NITW Director Prof. Bidyadhar Subudhi recollected the institute’s journey that began with three undergraduate programmes and its evolution into one of the top technical institutes in India by now offering 11 B Tech programmes, 26 M.Tech., 5 M.Sc., MCA, MBA, B.Sc.-B.Ed., and Integrated M.Sc. programme along with research in all STEM disciplines.

The institutes’ academic community comprises 8,000 students, 700 faculty and staff and a strong network of over 42,600 alumni. In 2024–25, faculty published 884 journal papers, 350 conference publications and 127 book chapters, received 95 national and international honours and secured 25 patents.

The institute obtained Rs 45.65 crore research funding including GIAN, SPARC, MSME, and MeitY. In a notable achievement- the continuous production of silver nanowires for electrically conductive applications- was transferred to industry in collaboration with IIT Ropar under MeitY support, the Director noted.

NITW achieved an approximate 81.3 percent placement rate, with top packages reaching Rs 64 LPA. Two new research centres, the Centre for Materials and Manufacturing (CMM) and the Centre for Translational Research (CTR) were set up recently.

The Distinguished Alumni Awards–2025 were presented to eminent alumni for their outstanding contributions in academia, research, industry, corporate administration and entrepreneurship.
