Sangareddy: To spread awareness about the importance of thrift and to give a sense of financial security to parents, the gram panchayat of Yeddumailaram has decided not only to cover all the girl children aged below 10 years in the village under Sukanya Samridhi Yojana (SSY), but also pay the first installment of Rs 1,000.
Under the laudable initiative proposed by Kasala Malla Reddy, sarpanch of the village, SSY accounts will be opened in the names of 48 girl children under the age of 10. Another 36 children in this age group have already been covered under the scheme by their parents. The documents will be handed over to the girls and their parents at an event on March 7 on the eve of International Women’s Day, that will see District Collector M Hanumantha Rao and elected representives participating in the programme.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Malla Reddy said there were 83 girls in the age group in the village, and with this initiative, all of them would be covered under SSY. “We have collected Rs One lakh through donations from philanthropists and we expect the amount to go up by March 7. I will also be contributing a matching amount to facilitate the first instalment payment. The remaining amount will be deposited in a bank account that can eventually be used for the girl children later,” he said.
He said parents of girl children would be sensitised about the importance of saving money for their daughters’ future and for their education when they grow up. “We will also constitute a committee to ensure that all the girl children get education besides making efforts to create employment opportunities for women in the village to make them financially independent,” he said, adding that the gram panchayat was motivated by a similar exercise undertaken by Haridaspur village in Kondapur mandal in the district last year.
The committee, he said, will also ensure that the money saved in the accounts of the girl children is spent judiciously.
