Hyderabad: Remembering the pride of Telugus, tributes poured in from fans and celebrities on Friday marking 98th birth anniversary of legendary actor and statesman NT Rama Rao, recalling his contribution to Telugu cinema and to the nation.
NTR’s film career skyrocketed with the debut flick ‘Mana Desam’ way back in 1949.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu described him as a versatile actor of exceptional calibre who brought mythological roles to life and as a people’s leader, he passionately strove for the welfare of the poor, farmers & women. “#NTR will always be remembered for his invaluable contribution to the development of the Telugu people,” he said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, voices from fans demanding highest civilian award Bharat Ratna to be conferred upon the legendary actor reached a crescendo. Besides political parties, fans and celebrities too have been vouching for the award to be conferred in recognition of NTR’s exceptional service in both the fields.
Megastar Chiranjeevi said in a tweet that the Union government should announce Bharat Ratna to NT Rama Rao like it had announced the highest civilian award posthumously to noted musician and playback singer Bhupen Hazarika. “It would be a pride moment for all Telugu people in the world, if the government announces the award to the legendary actor as the latter’s 100th anniversary is inching closer, “ he said.
“A cult figure in Indian cinema & politics, along with his successful on-screen portrayals, he also received appreciation for his screenwriting & direction. Seen here with #Bhanumathi in #BobbiliYuddham (1964). #NTR,” read a tweet from National Film Archive of India (NFAI).
Some of his iconic movies in Telugu remain ‘Malliswari’, the romantic flick starring actor Bhanumathi, ‘Pichi Pullayya’ a Telugu drama where NTR plays the role of innocent man Pullayya who faces severe hardships while working under a landlord and how he is proven innocent before facing jail is the story.
Another box office hit ‘Raju Peda’ which was released in 1954, was a massive crowd puller. The film based on Mark Twain’s 1881 novel, ‘The Prince and the Pauper’ features NTR in the role Pooligadu. Some of other blockbusters include ‘Cherapakura Chedevu’ and ‘Jayam Manade’.
