Hyderabad: The pandemic had a devastating impact on the Road Transport Corporation in the state capital with the daily occupancy falling to 22 lakh passengers in a day from 36 lakhs a day, Transport Minister P Ajay Kumar told Assembly on Saturday. The pandemic brought about a change in the way people commuted and many were preferring personal transportation over public transport. This impacted the occupancy ratio in buses which led to phenomenal losses which were compounded by the hike in diesel prices.
The minister told MIM legislator Moazam Khan and others that the hike in diesel prices from Rs 62 per litre to Rs 98 per litre had imposed a loss of Rs 1.8 crore loss in a day to the corporation. He said the RTC would operate more regular bus services in old city but not mini buses which were not viable. Since 2014, only 98 buses had gone off the road in old city and of these 20 were mini buses, he said during question hour.
He said efforts were on to introduce double decker buses in the city. MAUD Minister KT Rama Rao had assured to sanction funds for 10 such buses through HMDA, he said. And now the old city of Hyderabad was not really an old city with roads being widened and fly-overs being constructed, he remarked.
