Khammam: Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar invited Indian shuttler PV Sindhu to visit the district for a felicitation programme to be organised soon in Khammam.
The Minister called on the athlete at her residence in Hyderabad on Thursday after her return from Japan and presented her a memento while extending the invitation for the proposed felicitation programme.
Ajay Kumar congratulated Sindhu for winning the bronze medal in the badminton women’s singles category in Tokyo Olympics and becoming the first Indian woman to win medals at two consecutive Olympics, said a release from the Minister’s camp office here. The Minister interacted with the shuttler’s mother Vijaya and father Ramana (Arjun Award recipient), both volleyball players and congratulated them on their daughter’s achievements in the field of sports.
Sindhu explained to the Minister how she prepared for the Olympics and shown him her medals room and explained about the medals she won and the Arjun Award she received from the government. Ajay Kumar said that Sindhu consented to visit Khammam. It was happy to note that Sindhu was upholding the family’s sporting legacy, he said. Sindhu’s victories were a matter of pride for the two Telugu States and she has become an icon for Indian badminton, the Minister said while hoping that she would win a gold medal in the next Olympic Games.
The State government would always support and encourage Sindhu. After the formation of Telangana, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has been giving priority to sports and games promotion, he added.
