Hyderabad: An optometry technician, who was allegedly posing as an eye doctor, was caught while treating patients at Lions Eye Hospital, Khalilwadi, Nizamabad, by teams of Telangana State Medical Council (TSMC).

The optometric technician, D Satish, endangered the lives of patients by posing as a qualified doctor and performing medical service, a press release said, adding that TSMC chairman Dr Mahesh Kumar and registrar Dr Lalayya Kumar filed a complaint with the local police under Sections 18 and 19 of the BNS, Sections 34 and 54 of the NMC Act and Section 22 of the TSMPR Act.

A case has been registered at the Nizamabad-I Town Police Station.

During inspections, another fake doctor, RMP Mohammad Sandani, was found fraudulently deceiving public at his First Aid Center on Bodhan Road claiming to be a doctor and illegally possessing and administering steroids, painkillers and antibiotics to patients. The TSMC inspecting official, Dr Bandari Raj Kumar, said an FIR 197/2025 has been registered against Mohammad Sandani at the Nizamabad-I Town Police Station.

TSMC vice-chairman Dr G Srinivas said a formal complaint will be lodged with the DM&HO and the District Collector to take official action against Lions Eye Hospital for deceiving the public by presenting Optometry Technicians as eye doctors.

(The headline of the report was corrected to depict the exact nomenclature of the person caught posing as an eye doctor. He is an Optometry technician and not an Optometrist. Optometrists are trained primary eye care professionals who undergo four or more years of rigorous academic and clinical education. They are distinct from optometry technicians, who assist in eye care procedures but are not licensed to independently examine, diagnose, or treat patients)
