Hyderabad: In a concerning trend in the State engineering education, nearly 10 private colleges scored a nought under management quota admissions for the academic year 2024-25, reflecting a decline in demand for engineering degrees. All of these colleges are located in rural areas in the State.

These private managements, which depend on the B-Category (management) seats admissions to generate revenue for the college, now face acute financial crisis as they also recorded about 10-15 admissions under the convener quota- far less to run the show.

“Since running the college with 10-15 students per course is not viable, the management is expected to seek mobility of students. If they raise the request we will shift them to nearby colleges,” sources said.

For the academic year 2024-25, the State has 175 engineering colleges with an intake of 1.08 lakh seats, including 36,000 management quota seats. As per the information available with the Telangana Council of Higher Education, about 30,000 seats under the management quota have been filled, leaving about 6,000 vacant this year.

According to officials, core engineering programmes have lost a sheen as no students opted for them under the management quota this academic year. Only computer science and allied branches recorded a good demand among students in some colleges.

Further, the TGCHE has served show cause notices on nine private engineering colleges over deviations in admissions. The Council authorities found that colleges admitted students even before the admission notification was issued and without following the order of merit besides charging exorbitant fees.

While a notification for management quota seats has been issued on July 31, it was noticed that some colleges concluded the enrolment in May itself. During the course of investigation by a committee, it was found that a college collected Rs.2 lakh for a seat from a student in advance before issuance of admission notification.

“Based on the response of the college managements, the management quota seats admission ratification will be completed following due procedure. Otherwise, private colleges management quota admissions have been completed,” said sources.
