Hyderabad: Engineering seats have surged in the last three years, but admissions have gone down in Telangana. The enrollment fell from 91 percent in 2024 to 79 percent in the present academic year.
A three-year admission statistics released by the Higher Education department on Thursday reveal that the total number of convener seats increased from 87,184 in 2024 to 94,251 in 2026. However, the number of students admitted under convener quota via Telangana Engineering, Agriculture and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test (TG EAPCET) fell from 79,224 in 2024 to 94,251 in 2026.
Official sources attributed decline in convener quota admissions to students moving to private universities. “Several private universities have come up in the State. Students who are not confident of securing a seat in the counselling are moving to private universities that are offering engineering at Rs.2 lakh per annum,” sources said.
The statistics also revealed that admissions to Computer Science and IT courses declined, while Civil, Mechanical and allied engineering branches recorded a gradual increase in student enrolment.
Admissions in the Computer Science and IT branches went down from 59,546 in 2024 to 54,625 in 2026, a drop of 4,921, even as the number of seats increased by 4,719 during the same period. In contrast, Civil, Mechanical and allied branches enrolment increased from 4,571 in 2024 to 5,125 in 2026.
The Electronics and Electrical branches also saw a decline in admissions, with enrolment standing at 14,103 as against 16,739 seats in 2024. In 2026, as many as 13,709 students joined while there were 18,806 seats, translating the admission rate to 73 percent against 84 percent in 2024.
Further, only four engineering branches registered 100 percent admissions in the last three years. The programmes were Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Engineering (Networks), BTech Mechanical with M.Tech Manufacturing Systems, and BTech Mechanical with MTech Thermal Engineering.
This year, seven branches – Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Engineering (Networks), Electronics and Telematics, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Mechanical (Mechatronics) Engineering, BTech Mechanical with MTech Manufacturing Systems and BTech Mechanical with MTech Thermal Engineering – recorded 100 percent admissions.
