Flipping the bachelor party concept on its head is director Aparna Malladi’s latest feature film Pellikuturu Party. “It’s a girls bachelorette where they go on a road trip. The twist comes when the parents say this is not really our culture so take your baamma (grandmother) along with you. The girls go ‘how do we have fun with grandma around?’ So it all becomes about dodging her,” explains Aparna Malladi whose last project was the web series Posh Poris.
Pellikuturu Party, which is produced by Pruthvi Creations, has already got the makings of a hit going by its poster that shows an ensemble cast featuring actors Prince Cecil, Aneesha Dama, veteran actor Annapurna, Bhavana Vazhapandal, Sai Ketan Rao, Jaiyetri Makana and Kirrak Seetha.
“We also hit the jackpot with our leading guy, Prince, who liked the script right away and was okay with playing a kind of a supporting role in a movie told from a girl’s perspective. We needed a solid name for our baamma which we found in Annapurna garu who found the script delightful and immediately came onboard,” shares Aparna.
Like the director’s earlier projects, this film too features local talent. “I have always wanted Telugu-speaking girls in my films. I want to change this narrative that girls from the North are more glamorous than our girls. It’s important we give girls from the State a chance too,” explains Aparna.
Vibing with the film’s urban theme is its peppy music composed by Sweekar Agasthi. A new track, Pyjama Song that captures the new generation philosophy, was released recently. “When you see the four girls in the song, they all have this Hollywood-like appeal. They are as glamorous as they come,” adds Aparna.
The film’s shooting began in October and finished just before the State went into lockdown again. A majority of the film was shot in the city, but a lot of the portions were also shot in Ethipothala falls and Chirala beach. While the makers are looking at a theatrical release, they are just biding their time now as the situation develops.
