The end of 2020 was supposed to be a good thing for the entire world. A time when we would hopefully see an end in sight to the pandemic that upturned all of our lives.
But that was not the case with us.
While most of the world was celebrating the end of the year, my 2-year-old daughter, Durga was left suffering. Her body turned on her, with rising temperatures and scary rashes starting to appear all over her body.
When she didn’t show any signs of recovering, we rushed to the city hospital. At the hospital, Durga underwent multiple tests while my husband, Vinod and I waited in the hallway with our 4-year-old son.

Then, the doctors approached us with the results of the test that would turn our worlds upside down.
“I’m terribly sorry, Sir and Ma’am. It appears that Durga’s suffering from acute myeloid leukemia with a complex karyotype and MLL rearrangement. It is a rare type of blood cancer and in Durga’s case, it’s severe. We will start her on chemotherapy right away but the only long-term solution is a bone marrow transplant.”
Some of the doctor’s words were too unfamiliar for us to understand but the word ‘cancer’ was one we understood very well. Shivers ran down my spine when I heard the word.
My poor little baby. I couldn’t help but wonder why she would have to go through so much pain and suffering. She’s only 2 years old. Other children her age have no care in the world and that’s how it should be.

The only good news, is that her brother was found to be a perfect match for the bone-marrow transplant that Durga needs.
Every parent wants what’s best for their children but since we are poor we cannot have a say in anything. The cost of Durga’s cancer-fighting treatment is Rs 20 lakh ($ 27175.36) which is an amount we cannot afford.
If we do not do something soon, our daughter will have to pay the price for our poverty and I can’t bear to see that happen. I am a housewife and I run the house with earnings that Vinod makes from daily labour.
We cannot afford more than one real meal every day. How will we be able to afford our daughter’s treatment?
But I have hope in God and in people. Please step forward and support my daughter’s treatment. Please give so that we can save her life from cancer. You are our only hope.
