Kothagudem: Police arrested four Maoist couriers, including a minor, in Dummugudem mandal in the district on Saturday.
Bhadrachalam ASP B Rohith Raj told the mediapersons that the local Sub-Inspector of Police M Ravi Kumar along with station staff and 141 Bn CRPF G company personnel conducted vehicle checking near Pedda Bandirevu cross roads on Saturday. They noticed one car followed by two motorcycles coming from Bhadrachalam side in a suspicious manner.
Police stopped the car and the motorcycles and questioned the occupants, who identified themselves as Varsa Raju of Cherla, Komaram Nageswar Rao of Mangapet and Gedela Srinivasa Rao Hyderabad. They confessed to the police that they had been working as couriers for the banned CPI (Maoist) Party for a long time.
Following the directions of the top Maoist leadership, the couriers collected money from contractors Prabhakar Rao and Komaram Ram Murthy. They were on their way to handover the cash and Maoist Party literature to the party leaders at Kondavai forest area under the limits of Cherla Police station limits, the ASP said.
An amount of Rs 3.34 lakh, a car, two motorcycles, four mobile phones, and Maoist revolutionary literature were seized from their possession. The accused would be produced before the court for judicial remand, Rohith Raj said.
The Maoists were indulging in unlawful activities obstructing development work in the interior areas, forcing innocent tribals to join the party and collect funds forcibly for unlawful activities.
Aiding, funding and supporting the Maoist’s unlawful activities was a crime and action would be taken against those who resort to such acts, the ASP warned. He appealed to the businessmen, contactors and common people not to give funds to the Maoists and if they were threatened for funds by the Maoists, the police should be informed, he added.
