Hyderabad: The death of an unknown woman in suspicious circumstances in a pit dug up for a canal near Kotepally reservoir in Vikarabad district a few days ago has prompted the police to step up constant vigil on tourists thronging the waterbody.
The police department plans to conduct a detailed survey of the reservoir and its surroundings where a large number of tourists from the city visiting with families during weekends and holidays. Putting up make-shift tents, the tourists enjoy their weekend with food and snacks brought with them.
A few tourists were found to be loitering in dense Dummugudem reserve forest areas for long hours. “We first want to cover areas where tourists and villagers frequently visit and later submit a report to the senior officials for installing surveillance cameras to keep a constant tab on those arriving at the reservoir and reserve forest,” a police official said.
The focus would be mainly on all the routes connecting the reservoir and the forest to know how many vehicles were arriving there. The reservoir, located about 20 km from popular Vikarabad Hills, on an average attracts 10,000 tourists on weekends and holidays.
The need for stepping up surveillance gained pace when the police found the body of the woman aged around 22 years on October 3. Though the body was found stuffed in a plastic cover, the police officials are yet to identify it.
They enquired with the villagers and examined footage of surveillance cameras installed on the Kotepally route connecting Sanga Reddy district. However, the body could not be identified. The incident could have gone unnoticed for long if shepherds had failed to see a pack of dogs frequently going to the canal from where a foul smell was emanating.
