Hyderabad: BRS MLA and former minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy came down heavily on Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy for his callousness in addressing Telangana’s irrigation needs. He said the BRS demanded for switching on the Kannepalli pumps, but the Minister was indulging in politics and making excuses of the sunken piers at Medigadda barrage.

Countering statements of Uttam Kumar Reddy, the BRS leader pointed out that water levels at the Kannepalli pump house were at 96 metres, above the minimum draw down level (MDDL) of 93.5 metres. However, he said motors remained switched off and water was being released downstream, without filling reservoirs and various other water bodies on Godavari River.

Prashanth Reddy lambasted the Congress government for delaying water supply to farmers and accused it of indulging in political mudslinging, while farmers await irrigation water.

“Your government is releasing press notes instead of releasing water. You did not build a single check dam, desilt a tank, or irrigate a single additional acre during your 19-month rule,” he said.

He credited the BRS regime and the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project for Telangana’s record paddy production of 283 lakh tonnes last year, accusing the Congress of hijacking BRS achievements. He demanded the immediate activation of motors at Kannepalli and Kalwakurthy, warning that continued inaction would lead to an artificial drought.

“Wake up from deep slumber. Turn on the motors or be ready to face farmers’ wrath,” he warned.
