Hyderabad: Women and Children Welfare Minister Satyavathi Rathod here on Saturday asked officials to provide proper protection to the children whose parents died due to Covid-19 virus.

“On humanitarian grounds, we should ensure that these children get proper shelter and protection,” she said after a meeting with the Department of Women and Child Welfare Commissioner D Divya here.

The meeting was convened to discuss measures to be taken for the protection of pregnant women, lactating mothers and children in the wake of the pandemic. As many as 200 children, who lost their parents due to Covid, were presently taking shelter at the transit homes under the supervision of officials.

The Minister lamented that several women, especially pregnant women, were affected with the virus and a few children were becoming orphans after the death of their parents due to Covid. Since it is maintaining details of the pregnant women, the department should explain the precautions to be taken keeping in view of the pandemic situation.

“We must explain to the pregnant women the medicines that are supposed to be used after being affected with the virus,” the Minister said, asking officials to collect details of the orphaned children for providing protection to them.

She said the department has already established transit homes to ensure shelter to orphaned children and vehicles were also provided to bring them to transit homes.

People can dial childline toll free number 1098 or helpline number 040-237-33-665 to get necessary help to the orphaned children from the department. Divya said the State government was providing scholarships and fee reimbursement to orphaned children.
