Hyderabad: While New Zealand cricketer Kyle Jamieson raked in `moolah’ overnight after fetching Rs 15 cr in the IPL auctions, his fellow cricketer Devon Conway, whose base price was Rs 50 lakh, went unsold despite his proven ability with the bat.
Lesser-known players like Riley Meredith also became millionaires overnight fetching Rs 8 crore. However, putting aside the disappointment, the South African-born left-hander smashed his fifth straight half-century in the T20s to lift New Zealand to victory over Australia in the first T20. He smashed 10 fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 99-run knock showcasing his ability with the bat. While many franchises shelled out huge sums for a few players, no one showed any interest in Conway.
Indian off-spinner RaviChandran Ashwin took to Twitter and wrote, “Devon Conway is just 4 days late, but what a knock.” Former New Zealand cricketer and noted commentator Simon Doull reacted to Ashwin’s tweet saying the New Zealand cricketers were ignored constantly. “Not sure it matters @ashwinravi99. NZ players have continually been overlooked for second rate Australians in the IPL for years. Seems outside of IPL big bash is the only comp looked at.. #player #NZcricket,” he wrote.

The 29-year-old Conway was born in South Africa and moved to New Zealand in 2017. He made his debut for New Zealand last year against West Indies and joined the elite club of India’s Virender Sehwag, Zimbabwe’s Hamilton Masakadza, Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal, England’s Jos Buttler and Australia’s David Warner as the only players to score five straight half centuries in competitive T20 cricket.
His previous five scores are 99 not out, 93 not out, 91 not out, 69 not out and 50. In his short T20 career so far, Conway scored 273 runs at a strike rate of 157 and with a staggering average of 91.
