Hyderabad: The charm of Hyderabad lies not just in its ritzy techie corridors and shimmering skyscrapers, but actually more across the River Musi and on the other side of the Hussain Sagar, where heritage and history combine to create a magic that has always fascinated people from far and wide.

Conserving the precious heritage and ensuring infrastructure development all across the city is what the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been focusing on, with its efforts at protecting the city’s old world charm now showing results.

In the Old City, six conservation works have been successfully completed at a cost of Rs 11.28 crore while seven works are underway at an estimated cost of Rs 48.74 crore. Laying a granite pavement at Laad Bazar Road and Sardar Mahal Road, building a buffer zone around the Charminar and restoration of the Ashoor Khana in Hussaini Alam are some of the works that have been completed by the civic body.

Some of the works in progress include restoration of the Char Kamans around Charminar and Mahboob Chowk (Murgi Chowk) at Laad Bazar. The restoration works have been recently handed over to the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) by GHMC. Seven works at an estimated cost of Rs 48.7 crore are now being implemented by QQSUDA.

Another major work taken up to improve tourism in the Old City was the beautification and restoration of MJ Market and Clock Tower, Sultan Bazar at an estimated cost of Rs 17.51 crore. These works taken up in Old City are in addition to restoration of step-wells located in different parts of the city. The recently inaugurated step-wells at Bapu Ghat and Gachibowli are two examples.

Recently the Greater Hyderabad Heritage and Precincts Committee (GHHC) ordered removal of encroachments near 25 protected monuments in the city. Cleaning of bushes and improving landscaping will be taken up at these places.
