HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s claim on Saturday that he would continue in office for a second term is being seen by a few leaders in Gandhi Bhavan as him shooting off his mouth without remembering that such decisions were to be taken by the high command, and not by Revanth Reddy on his own.
They feel that he jumped the gun and that such comments should not be taken seriously.
The leaders opined that predictions of the Congress continuing to be in power for a second term were welcome, but stressed that there was nothing much to read into the Chief Minister’s claims.
“One has to bear in mind that important decisions, especially selecting candidates for elections, Cabinet berths, and most importantly, the Chief Minister’s post, are decided by the AICC and not in Gandhi Bhavan,” a senior leader said, asking that if Revanth Reddy was to decide affairs and major decisions were taken in Gandhi Bhavan, how did Vijayashanthi become an MLC candidate.
“This makes things clear on who calls the shots in Congress,” he pointed out. This apart, the manner in which the Gandhi family has been cold-shouldering Revanth Reddy and his inability to meet them despite several attempts and multiple trips to New Delhi make a few things evident, the leader added.
A section of leaders further stressed that any election, be it the Assembly or Parliament election, was won collectively by party leaders and the cadre. It would not be fair to claim credit individually.
Leave aside a second term, there was a lot of time left for the current term to be navigated. The Congress government would have to deliver on its promises and win the people’s confidence, they feel.
The underlining factor behind Revanth Reddy’s claim that he would continue as Chief Minister for a second term, a senior leader observed, was a ploy to hog the limelight and stamp his authority on party affairs in Telangana.
In addition to this, it was also a move to divert the people’s attention from key issues like the fulfillment of promises, availability of irrigation water to save the crops, SLBC tunnel incident, and others, and also to keep at bay any efforts by other senior leaders to occupy the Chief Minister’s chair.
It was a try at keeping political discussions centered on him, the leader felt.
