Hyderabad: The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here is getting bigger, and better.

According to a post from the RGIA social media handles on Monday, expansion of the airport, which was earlier this month awarded the Gold Recognition by the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2021 in the below 25 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) category, were progressing.

A new state of the art terminal would serve close to 34 million passengers per year, as against the airport’s initial capacity of 12 million passengers per annum. There would be 149 check-in counters to enable hassle free journeys. There would also be 44 new aerobridges, while four new rapid exit taxiways with enhanced runway capacity would also be part of the expansion, which is expected to result in over 51 aircraft movements per hour, according to the post from the RGIA’s official Twitter handle.

The four new rapid exit taxiways with enhanced runway capacity, will mean more flights. RGIA’s primary aircraft landing strip with 4260m length is already the second longest in India, and provides the landing platform for the largest of aircraft in the world including Airbus A380.

According to the master plan for the airport, the ultimate capacity will be over 80 MPPA with multiple runway configuration connected by cross taxiways, rapid exit taxiways, multiple integrated passenger terminals and other associated support infrastructure, which will be part of further expansions. In 2019 before the pandemic struck, RGIA had a footfall of over 21.4 million passengers making it one of the busiest airports in Asia.

In July, the airport saw an increase in the number of flights across domestic sectors, with the Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) in July. From just over 100 on June 1, the ATMs reached 288 on July 25. More than 8000 ATMs were recorded in July.

Daily passenger volume flowing through the airport almost tripled in the last two months and the airport witnessed more than 6.8 lakh domestic passengers and more than 50,000 international travellers during July.

Meanwhile, plans are afoot to add four new domestic routes connecting Hyderabad to new cities in the coming months.
