Hyderabad: In just one week, between January 22 and 28, eight lives were lost and 29 others sustained injuries in 37 road accidents under the Rachakonda Police limits.
During the week, the Rachakonda Traffic Police booked 46,814 cases for violation of various traffic rules and imposed fines to the tune of Rs 1.96 crore against motorists.
The highest number of cases booked were against two-wheeler riders with 27,521 cases registered for not wearing helmet. The traffic police also booked cases for other violations including driving without using seatbelt, not possessing driving license, overspeeding, speaking on cellphones while driving and dangerous driving.
While the traffic police had temporary suspended the drunk driving due to Covid-19 pandemic, nine persons who were previously caught by the police were produced before court. The court imposed a fine of Rs 31,000 on them. “All the persons who are caught during the drunk driving checks are produced before the court. They also have to attend traffic awareness programmes,” said an official of Rachakonda Traffic Police.
During the last week, a total of 37 road accidents were reported and eight persons died while 29 others sustained injuries. “As per road accident analysis data it is found that most accidents occur due to human errors and road engineering defects,” said the official.
After every road accident, a joint team of officials from law & order and traffic police, visit the spot to study and assess the cause of accident. “After identifying the causative factors, the needed remedial measures to prevent accidents at that particular spot are introduced,” he explained.
During the last week, the traffic police put up speed breakers at NFC road, raised the height of road median at Neredmet road and ECIL crossroads, installed reflective studs at Khaitapuram junction and took up painting of central medians at Mangalapally where accidents took place last week.
To ease the traffic flow on main thoroughfares senior officials have instructed the field officials to increase patrolling and remove all vehicles illegally parked.
