Hyderabad: A screening programme to identify cancers among individuals at an early stage and special cancer treatment services in the districts will be launched in the coming months, State Health Minister, T Harish Rao on Friday, on the occasion of World Cancer Day, said.
Through Aarogyasri, the State government annually is already incurring an expenditure of Rs. 100 crore to provide cancer treatment to patients in Telangana. Every year, over 5000 cancer patients avail cancer treatment facilities at NIMS, MNJ Cancer Hospital and even private hospitals.
“Despite providing treatment to so many cancer patients, the fact remains that a majority of them are getting diagnosed very late. By the time we are able to diagnose cancer among them, they have already reached stage four. That’s why, there is a need to launch special screening programmes, so that the treatment outcomes and quality of life among patients who have received treatment is good,” Harish Rao said.
To reduce the heavy patient flow at MNJ Cancer Hospital, in the coming months, the State government will also launch exclusive chemo and radiotherapy services to cancer patients at District Hospitals.
“People must also realise that despite the State government’s efforts at improving cancer care in government hospitals, the fact remains that lifestyle changes, especially avoiding tobacco and alcohol consumption is vital to reduce cancers,” Harish Rao said.
