Hyderabad: The next three to four weeks were crucial in the fight against Covid-19 and the second wave of the pandemic in Telangana would be under control by the end of May if people continue to take precautions, senior health officials said here on Wednesday.

“There are clear signs of Covid cases dropping and reaching a plateau not only in Telangana but also in States like Maharashtra. The next three to four weeks are crucial and we urge the public to continue to take precautionary measures. We are hoping that by the end of May, the second wave will be under control,” Director of Public Health (DPH) Dr G Srinivasa Rao said during an interaction with press persons here on Wednesday.

The health official appreciated the way the people of Telangana have responded to the call given by State government on following Covid appropriate behaviour.

“The night curfew has started to show positive results. People in the State are meticulously following the use of masks, physical distancing and hand hygiene. Our observations indicate that more than 90 per cent of the individuals in the State are now wearing masks. Families are postponing important functions, marriages and even religious celebrations during the pandemic. As a result, the Covid cases have gradually started to come down,” Dr.Rao said.

The DPH has urged the public to avoid unnecessarily rushing to State-run Covid testing centres if they don’t have symptoms or are generally healthy.

“There is a clear panic among the general public. As a result, individuals with no symptoms are rushing to Covid testing centres for tests. Some are even getting themselves tested twice or thrice a week. As a result, persons with symptoms are unable to get access to testing. Due to the panic rush, testing centres are turning into breeding grounds for Covid infections,” he said.

The DPH and Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr K Ramesh Reddy pointed out that despite strengthening infrastructure, oxygen supply and providing 24×7 health care services during the pandemic, it is up to the individuals in the community to avoid getting infected.

“The public must realise that it is also their responsibility to behave properly. They must act responsibly and take as much precautions as possible. The pandemic can only be controlled if individuals continue to follow Covid precautions,” Dr.Reddy added.
