Adilabad: A self-styled godman was arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a minor girl at Ispur village in Neradigonda mandal on Wednesday.
Neradigonda Sub-Inspector Bharat Suman said the accused was Jadav Athmaram, a 26-year-old priest and a native of Rajura village in Neradigonda mandal. The victim belongs to Ispur.
Athmaram was booked on charges of attempting to rape a 16-year old girl in his room when she fetched drinking water for him on June 18. He fled from the spot when the girl fainted after he gagged her mouth. Her mother grew suspicious when the girl did not return home for quite a long time. She managed to open the room and approached the police on Monday.
Based on a complaint lodged by the mother, a case was registered against him under the Section 376 read with Section 511 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). Investigations have been taken up.
