Senior gynecologist, founder of Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation passes away

Dr Ushalakshmi graduated and obtained her PG from Guntur Medical College and was Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology at Niloufer Hospital for a long time

Hyderabad: Senior gynecologist and founder of Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, Dr. Kotha Ushalakshmi has passed away due to heart failure on Tuesday. She was 91.

Dr Ushalakshmi graduated and obtained her PG from Guntur Medical College and was Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology at Niloufer Hospital for a long time.


A breast cancer conqueror herself, Dr Ushalakshmi later founded Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, a not-for-profit breast cancer charity in September 2007, to empower women on the importance of early detection of breast cancer and establish a population based Breast Cancer Screening Programme.

Later, her son Dr Raghu Ram, who was in the United Kingdom shifted to Hyderabad and took over as the CEO, Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation and Founding Director of KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases.

Dr Ushalakshmi married noted surgeon and former President of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), Dr P V Chalapathi Rao, who had passed away in November, 2020.

“The greatest legacy that anyone can leave behind is to positively impact the lives of others. Her glorious life well and truly epitomizes this,” Dr Rahu Ram in a statement said.

Dr Ushalakshmi is survived by her son Dr Raghu Ram, daughter-in-law Dr Vyjayanthi and two grandchildren Sai and Krishna.
