Hyderabad: Surgeons from Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Kondapur have performed a complex surgery to remove a tumour that was lodged in the neck region of a 7-year-old young girl Padmini from Hyderabad.
Diagnosed as cervical osteoid osteoma, the tumour was located very close to a major blood vessel that was supplying blood to the brain of the youngster. It was also close to the vertebral artery and was difficult to operate, senior spine surgeon, KIMS, Dr Sri Krishna Chaitanya, who led the surgery, said.
“Before surgery, we did a lot of pre-operative planning including 3-D printing technology to make a bone model so that we can plan well before the actual surgery. The entire tumour excision had to be done in one piece completely, which helps in quick recovery and recurrence of cancer is rare,” Dr Chaitanya in a press release said.
As part of the surgery, the tumour was separated from the vertebral artery. “Padmini has recovered well and has resumed normal activities,” he added.
